Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway are set to headline Alone
at Dawn, a war drama being directed by Ron Howard for Amazon MGM.
The film is part of Amazon MGM’s renewed first-look
agreement with Brian Grazer and Howard’s Imagine Entertainment, which is among
the producing partners on the project.
Adapted from the 2019 book of the same name, Alone at
Dawn tells the true story of U.S. Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman
and the intelligence officer who later championed efforts to secure him the
Medal of Honor. Driver will portray Chapman, while Hathaway plays the officer.
Chapman was involved in a SEAL Team Six mission in
Afghanistan during which helicopters were shot down. Severely wounded, he
continued fighting to protect his teammates but was mistakenly presumed dead.
During the night, he regained consciousness, fought off additional attackers,
and even engaged when a second U.S. helicopter came under fire. His actions
saved numerous lives. Years later, a campaign began to upgrade his Air Force
Cross to a Medal of Honor. Despite resistance from another military branch, which
feared admitting Chapman had been abandoned, he was ultimately awarded the
honor.
The book, written by Dan Schilling and Lori Longfritz
(Chapman’s sister), was brought to Hideaway Pictures by management firm
Thruline. Hideaway, run by Jonathan Chapman and Matthew Rhodes, acquired the
rights after a competitive bidding process. The company previously produced
war-themed films such as Cherry (starring Tom Holland) and Mile 22
(starring Mark Wahlberg).
Michael Russell Gunn (Designated Survivor) was
initially hired to adapt the screenplay. The project later moved to Imagine,
which set it up at MGM, with subsequent rewrites by Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary,
The Girl on the Train) and Amy Herzog (The Savant). Schilling,
himself a former combat controller, is serving as military consultant.
Producers include Imagine, Hideaway, and Thruline, alongside
Kristy Grisham, William Connor, and Patrick Newall. Gunn will serve as
executive producer.
Hathaway is currently filming The Devil Wears Prada 2
and also appears in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and David Robert
Mitchell’s Flowervale Street, both slated for release next year. She
will next be seen in David Lowery’s Mother Mary and MGM’s Verity,
adapted from Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel.
Driver recently starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis
and will appear in Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother as well
as James Gray’s Paper Tiger.
Representation: Hathaway is with Entertainment 360 and
Sloane Offer; Driver with WME and Offer; Gunn with WME, Artists First, and
Myman Greenspan; Wilson with CAA, Art/Work Entertainment, and Schreck Rose;
Herzog with WME and Johnson Shapiro.
