Universal Pictures’ upcoming Miami Vice film may have found its new Sonny Crockett.
Austin Butler is reportedly in talks to play James
“Sonny” Crockett in director Joseph Kosinski’s adaptation of the
classic 1980s NBC police drama. Earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter
revealed that Michael B. Jordan is also in negotiations to star as Ricardo
“Rico” Tubbs, the role originally played by Philip Michael Thomas.
The new film, inspired by the show’s pilot episode and
first season, will revisit the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami.
The screenplay comes from Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy, with
Kosinski producing alongside Dylan Clark (The Batman).
Production is expected to begin next year, and Universal
has set the movie’s theatrical release for August 6, 2027.
The original Miami Vice series, created by Anthony
Yerkovich, premiered in September 1984 and ran for five seasons,
becoming a defining show of its decade thanks to its stylish visuals, pastel
aesthetics, and iconic soundtrack.
In 2006, Michael Mann—who served as an executive
producer on the original series—directed a previous film adaptation starring Colin
Farrell as Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Tubbs. That version earned $163
million worldwide (about $263 million today).
