Charli XCX and Jessica Alba are reportedly in negotiations to join A Tree Is Blue, the upcoming feature directorial debut from Dakota Johnson. The film, written by Vanessa Burghardt—who may also appear onscreen—is set to begin production next month in Los Angeles.
While plot details are still under wraps, the project is
moving forward with full financing from Rivulet Entertainment. Sales are being
handled by CAA Media Finance.
The producing team includes Dakota Johnson, Ro Donnelly, and
Sam Racanelli for TeaTime Pictures, along with Rob Paris and Mike Witherill for
Rivulet. Executive producers are Hyunji Ward for TeaTime and Rick Steele.
Johnson previously directed the short film Loser Baby,
which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. She most recently
starred in and produced Splitsville for Neon and appeared in A24’s The
Materialists.
Vanessa Burghardt, a first-time screenwriter, co-starred
with Johnson in Cha Cha Real Smooth.
Alba recently starred in and produced Netflix’s Trigger
Warning and will next appear in the biographical sports drama Maserati:
The Brothers, alongside Anthony Hopkins, Andy Garcia, and Al Pacino.
Charli XCX, a Grammy-winning musician, is continuing her
expansion into film. She’s set to produce and star in the A24 feature The
Moment, and has roles in Faces of Death, I Want Your Sex, and
The Gallerist.
