Colman Domingo has officially joined the cast of Wicked: For Good as the voice of the Cowardly Lion, adding even more star power to the already stacked lineup. He’ll appear alongside Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who reprise their roles as Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (Glinda the Good), respectively.
Though Domingo’s involvement was kept under wraps, the news
was revealed Monday through the film's and actor’s Instagram accounts. The
announcement comes shortly after director Jon M. Chu hinted last week that a
well-known actor had been cast in a major role.
The Cowardly Lion is one of several iconic Wizard of Oz
characters who will appear in Wicked: For Good. The film will also
feature the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Dorothy, whose appearances have been teased
in earlier promos and the first film. However, the actors playing those
characters have yet to be announced.
Wicked: For Good is the sequel to 2024’s Wicked,
and it marks the first time Elphaba and Glinda directly interact with the
legendary characters from The Wizard of Oz. The second installment will
intertwine with the storyline of the original 1939 film, picking up as Dorothy
lands in Oz.
Rounding out the cast are Jonathan Bailey as Prince Fiyero,
Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. Both Erivo
and Grande received Oscar nominations for their performances in the original
film, which earned 10 Academy Award nominations and won two.
