Disney is once again letting down Rapunzel’s hair the studio has resumed development on its long-gestating live-action adaptation of Tangled.
The Greatest Showman filmmaker Michael Gracey
is set to direct, working from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
(Do Revenge, Thor: Love and Thunder). Scarlett Johansson
is reportedly being considered for the role of the manipulative Mother Gothel.
The project will be produced by Kristin Burr of Burr!
Productions alongside Emmy winner Lucy Kitada (The Baby-Sitters Club).
The 2010 animated hit Tangled based on the Brothers
Grimm tale of Rapunzel starred Mandy Moore as the spirited princess with
impossibly long hair and Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel. The film became
a major success for Disney, earning more than $590 million worldwide and
an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for “I See the Light.”
Earlier this year, development on Tangled had been
paused following the underperformance of Disney’s live-action Snow White
starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. However, the studio has
since rebounded with strong results from Lilo & Stitch and Mufasa:
The Lion King.
Disney continues to expand its slate of live-action
reimaginings, with Thomas Kail’s Moana—starring Catherine
Laga’aia and Dwayne Johnson—set to hit theaters on July 10, 2026.
