Elle Fanning Says Elizabeth Banks Gave Her Blessing to Play Effie in Hunger Games Prequel

Elle Fanning is stepping into the colorful shoes of Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping — and she's doing so with the support of original star Elizabeth Banks.

Elle Fanning attends the 5th Annual Academy Museum Gala at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Oct. 18 in Los Angeles.

Fanning recently shared that Banks, who portrayed the iconic character in the original Hunger Games films, sent her a heartfelt gesture after the casting was announced. “She sent me these beautiful flowers and said, ‘May the odds be ever in your favor,’” Fanning told The Hollywood Reporter at the Academy Museum Gala. “We texted a little bit. She made that role so iconic and lovable, so I really hope I can live up to what she gave fans.”

Production on Sunrise on the Reaping is currently underway, and Fanning noted that she’s nearly wrapped filming her parts. “We’re shooting now,” she said. “Effie is on the screen. I’m almost done with my section.”

The upcoming prequel is based on Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name and takes place 24 years before Katniss Everdeen enters the arena — during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the second Quarter Quell. In this chapter, a younger Effie serves as the Capitol escort and stylist for a young Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Joseph Zada.

Francis Lawrence, who directed several of the original films, returns to helm the prequel, set for release on November 20, 2026. The star-studded cast includes Joseph Zada, Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor, Ben Wang, and Ralph Fiennes as a young President Snow.

Fanning also acknowledged the role fans played in her casting, telling MTV earlier this year, “It was funny because I think fans kind of made this happen. The studio told me they were getting bombarded online — like, ‘Elle needs to be Effie!’”
