HBO unveiled the first trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms during its New York Comic Con panel on Thursday, along with the show’s official premiere date January 18.
The teaser offers a first look at the upcoming Game of
Thrones prequel, which trades the grandeur of House of the Dragon
for a grittier, more grounded tone something akin to Andor in the Star
Wars universe.
The six-episode first season adapts George R.R. Martin’s
beloved novella The Hedge Knight and stars Peter Claffey as Ser
Duncan the Tall (known as Dunk), a wandering “hedge knight,” alongside Dexter
Sol Ansell as his young squire, Egg.
Co-created by Martin and showrunner Ira Parker, the
series focuses less on politics and magic and more on the rough, realistic life
of knights and commoners. “Nobody is thinking about magic here,” Parker told Entertainment
Weekly. “It’s gritty, medieval storytelling closer to 14th-century Britain
than the fantasy of Thrones. We’re starting from the ground up no kings,
queens, or lords, just knights struggling to survive.” Martin himself praised
the adaptation, saying he “loved all six episodes.”
HBO’s official synopsis reads:
“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two
unlikely heroes roam Westeros the brave but humble knight Ser Duncan the Tall
and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryens still hold
the Iron Throne and dragons are not yet forgotten, the pair face dangerous
foes, fateful adventures, and destinies that will shape the realm.”
The ensemble cast also includes Edward Ashley (Masters
of the Air) as Ser Steffon Fossoway, Youssef Kerkour (House of
Gucci) as Steely Pate, Daniel Monks (Kaos) as Ser Manfred
Dondarrion, Shaun Thomas (How to Have Sex) as Raymun Fossoway, Tom
Vaughan-Lawlor (Avengers: Infinity War) as Plummer, Danny Webb
(The Regime) as Ser Arlan of Pennytree, and Henry Ashton (A
Good Girl’s Guide to Murder) as Daeron Targaryen.
