Keanu Reeves Pays Tribute to Diane Keaton: “She Was a Very Special Artist and Person”

Keanu Reeves is honoring the memory of his Something’s Gotta Give co-star Diane Keaton, who passed away on Saturday at age 79.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the New York premiere of his latest film Good Fortune, Reeves reflected warmly on their time working together. “I had the wonderful opportunity to work with her,” he said. “She was a very special artist and person truly unique, and such a wonderful artist.”

Reeves and Keaton starred opposite each other in Nancy Meyers’ 2003 romantic comedy, with Keaton’s character, playwright Erica Barry, caught between the affections of Reeves’ young doctor and Jack Nicholson’s older music executive. The role earned Keaton an Oscar nomination, and she later reunited with Reeves as a presenter at the 2020 Academy Awards.

Reeves’ heartfelt comments came just hours after director Nancy Meyers posted her own emotional tribute on Instagram. “As a movie lover, I’m with you all we have lost a giant,” she wrote. “A brilliant actress who laid herself bare to tell our stories. As a woman, I lost a friend of almost 40 years someone who often felt like a sister. As a filmmaker, I’ve lost a connection with an actress that one can only dream of.”

Meyers reminisced about working with Keaton on Something’s Gotta Give, recalling how deeply she committed to every emotional scene. “When I needed her to cry in take after take, she went for it and somehow made it funny,” she shared. “Sometimes she’d spin in a little circle before a take to shake something loose, to be in the moment. She was fearless, unlike anyone else, and born to be a movie star. Her laugh could make your day.”

“She changed my life,” Meyers added. “Thank you, Di. I’ll miss you forever.”

In tribute to Keaton’s legacy, AMC Theatres will re-release Annie Hall and Something’s Gotta Give in 100 theaters across the U.S.
