Michael B. Jordan is in early negotiations to star in Universal Pictures’ upcoming Miami Vice movie, which will be directed by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski.
If the deal closes, Jordan will take on the role of Ricardo
Tubbs, one half of the iconic detective duo Crockett and Tubbs. The part of
James Crockett has not yet been cast.
The film will reimagine the glitz, danger, and moral
complexity of Miami in the mid-1980s, drawing inspiration from the pilot and
first season of the groundbreaking TV series that helped define the decade’s
pop culture, fashion, and film aesthetics.
Originally created by Anthony Yerkovich, Miami Vice
debuted as a hit NBC television series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael
Thomas as stylish undercover Miami cops known for their sleek boats, fast cars,
and pastel suits.
The franchise last hit the big screen in 2006 with Jamie
Foxx and Colin Farrell starring in Michael Mann’s gritty reboot, which grossed
$163.7 million worldwide.
The new Miami Vice adaptation is being produced by
Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Kosinski, with a screenplay by Eric Warren
Singer and Dan Gilroy, based on Yerkovich’s original characters.
