‘Mortal Kombat II’ Sequel Already Greenlit as Writer Confirms Plans for a Third Film at NYCC 2025

Mortal Kombat II screenwriter Jeremy Slater revealed during the film’s New York Comic Con panel on Saturday that New Line and Warner Bros. have officially greenlit another Mortal Kombat installment.

“Come out to theaters next summer and make sure they know there’s an audience for this movie,” Slater told the cheering crowd. “We want to keep making these for you guys.”

Slater was joined on stage by director Simon McQuoid and cast members Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford, who discussed the sequel’s production delays and teased what fans can expect from the upcoming release.

When asked about the shift in release date from October to May 16, 2026, McQuoid explained that the delay was due to the movie being “a victim of our own success.”
“Every time people have seen this movie, it’s gained momentum,” he said. “We’ve created a massive summer blockbuster. It’s worth the wait Mortal Kombat II is going to feel huge when it lands next year.”

The panel opened with behind-the-scenes footage promising “fatalities, flawless victories,” and a sequel “bigger in every way possible.” McQuoid and Slater confirmed that this new chapter will heavily focus on Johnny Cage (Urban) and Kitana (Rudolph).

Slater said the creative goal was to expand the tone and world teased in the first movie’s opening. “We only scratched the surface. There’s so much lore to explore. I wanted to push everything the scale, the visuals, and the emotional stakes,” McQuoid added. “This time, you’ll travel through multiple realms and environments, each with its own unique energy.”

While the sequel promises more heart, it won’t sacrifice the franchise’s signature combat. “We’ve doubled the number of fight sequences,” McQuoid revealed. “The tournament structure lets every character’s journey intersect, creating a variety of dynamic, massive battles.”

Slater added, “You can’t make a six-hour Mortal Kombat movie, but we’ve packed in so many character moments and fights that there’s never any downtime. Even between matches, the heroes are off on their own missions.”

The film will also receive a full IMAX release, which McQuoid says will include exclusive visual details. “If you consider yourself a Mortal Kombat fan, you’ll need to see it in IMAX there are hidden moments that subtly affect the story,” he teased.

The panel also offered a glimpse into Johnny Cage’s character arc. According to Karl Urban, audiences will meet Cage at rock bottom. “When we first see him, his career is in shambles. He’s out of shape, forgotten, and completely lost,” Urban said. “Throughout the film, he’s forced back into action and evolves into the champion we all know.”

Slater added that reinventing Cage was one of the creative highlights: “In the games, he already has everything fame, ego, swagger. It was fun to strip that away and watch him earn it back.”
