Zach Cherry, best known for his breakout role in Severance, has joined the cast of Sony Pictures and Zach Cregger’s highly anticipated Resident Evil reboot. He’ll star alongside Kali Reis (True Detective) and Johnno Wilson (I Love That for You), rounding out a growing ensemble for the reimagined horror franchise.
Leading the new adaptation is Austin Abrams, who
recently drew acclaim for his turn as a homeless addict in Cregger’s summer hit
Weapons. The upcoming film will chart a fresh direction for the
long-running series — described as a tribute to the original Capcom video
games, but centered on newly created characters and storylines
rather than rehashing previous adaptations.
Cregger is directing and co-writing the screenplay
with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 & 4).
While the plot remains tightly under wraps, sources hint
that the story involves a hapless courier, a mysterious package, mutated
creatures, and a corporate conspiracy — all hallmarks of the Resident
Evil universe.
Cherry is reportedly playing a scientist working in a
hospital, while Reis portrays a former military operative, a part
originally written for a male actor. Wilson’s role is being kept secret for
now.
Production is set to begin mid-October in Prague,
with Sony Pictures planning a September 18, 2026 theatrical release.
The film is being produced and co-financed by Constantin
Film, with Robert Kulzer overseeing for the company. Other producers
include Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment (who also
worked on Weapons), alongside Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan
of PlayStation Productions (The Last of Us, Uncharted). Oliver Berben
(Constantin) and Victor Hadida (Davis Films) will serve as executive
producers, while TriStar Pictures president Nicole Brown is supervising
for Sony.
Cherry recently earned an Emmy nomination for his
performance as Dylan George on Apple TV+’s acclaimed series Severance
and has appeared in Fallout and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten
Rings. He’ll next be seen in TriStar’s comedy The Breadwinner.
Reis, a former professional boxer turned actress,
gained critical recognition opposite Jodie Foster in HBO’s True Detective:
Night Country, earning Emmy, Critics Choice, and Golden Globe
nominations. Her upcoming projects include Mercy (with Chris Pratt
and Rebecca Ferguson), Apple TV+’s 12 12 12 (with Anthony Mackie and
Jamie Dornan), and Wind River: Rising for Castle Rock Entertainment.
Wilson, a Groundlings alum, has appeared in Twisted
Metal (Peacock), I Love That for You (Showtime), and Curb Your
Enthusiasm.
Cherry is represented by CAA, Edna Cowan
Management, and Felker Toczek. Reis is repped by CAA, Authentic
Talent, and Jackoway Austen. Wilson is represented by 3 Arts
Entertainment and Lichter Grossman.
