Richard Gere Pays Tribute to Diane Keaton: “She Was Completely Original”

Richard Gere is honoring the memory of iconic actress Diane Keaton.

During an appearance on the Today show Thursday morning, Gere reflected on Keaton, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 79 due to pneumonia. The two first shared the screen in 1977’s Looking for Mr. Goodbar, which was only Gere’s second film. Decades later, they reunited for the 2023 romantic comedy Maybe I Do.

“Of course, I’ve been thinking about her,” Gere said. “We made a film together a few years back. I hadn’t seen her in a long time.”

Reflecting on their early work, Gere recalled their time filming Looking for Mr. Goodbar: “That was a tough film—it was raw and very sexual. Diane was quite shy and nervous, and so was I. It was only my second movie. We really supported each other through those intense scenes.”

He continued, “What always stood out was how sweet, gentle, and genuine she was. Anyone who ever worked with her would say the same—she was real. Completely original.”

Following Keaton’s passing, many celebrities and former co-stars shared tributes online.

Keanu Reeves, who starred with Keaton in the beloved film Something’s Gotta Give, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week. “I had the wonderful opportunity to work with her,” Reeves said. “She was a truly unique and special person—an amazing artist.”
