Sydney Sweeney is on a mission to keep audiences guessing with every new project she takes on — and her latest role may be her most unexpected yet.
The Euphoria and Anyone But You star premiered
her new film Christy at Hollywood’s AFI Fest on Saturday. The movie
tells the true story of Christy Martin, the groundbreaking 1990s professional
boxer who rose to fame in the male-dominated sport while battling serious
personal struggles behind the scenes.
“Christy’s story is absolutely incredible,” Sweeney told The
Hollywood Reporter. “Even if I hadn’t been acting in it, I would’ve wanted
to be involved somehow — just to help bring her journey to light and show what
an inspiring advocate and role model she is.”
Sweeney both stars in and produces Christy, calling
the experience a dream for any performer. “As an actor, I love getting to step
into completely different lives,” she explained. “That’s what made me fall in
love with this craft — being able to disappear into all these different
characters.”
To prepare for the role, Sweeney underwent months of intense
boxing training and gained 30 pounds. “Every single fight you see in the film
is an exact recreation of one Christy actually fought,” she said. “So it wasn’t
just about learning to box — I had to memorize her exact movements from every
match.”
When Martin finally saw the completed film, she called
Sweeney in tears to praise her performance. “She told me, ‘It felt like you
went back in time and lived through those moments with me. You captured how I
talk, how I move — everything,’” Sweeney recalled. “That was the most amazing
feeling to hear.”
As for what’s next, Sweeney — who also has The Housemaid
and the third season of Euphoria on the horizon — says she’s always
looking for something unexpected. “Yes and no, it changes what I want to do,”
she said. “I’m constantly drawn to projects where people go, ‘Wait, Sydney
Sweeney’s doing that?’ It’s exciting to push myself and find new
challenges.”
