Taylor Swift has officially dropped the music video for her latest single, “The Fate of Ophelia,” on Sunday just two days after its exclusive debut in theaters.
The visually stunning clip, which Swift directed herself,
first premiered as part of her limited-run cinematic event Taylor Swift: The
Official Release Party of a Showgirl, tied to the rollout of her new album The
Life of a Showgirl.
The video reunites Swift with Oscar-nominated
cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon,
Brokeback Mountain), who previously collaborated with her on visuals like
“Fortnight” and “Cardigan.” Together, they deliver an opulent, era-hopping
spectacle that matches the theatrical flair of her new record.
In her review for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Angie
Han described the video as “a dazzling tour through a century of showgirl
glamour,” praising Swift’s seamless transitions between characters from a
Pre-Raphaelite muse inspired by John Everett Millais’ Ophelia to a 1930s
Busby Berkeley chorus girl to a sultry 1960s cabaret performer. Han added that
“the choreography by Mandy Moore is razor-sharp, the costumes and sets are
lavish, and the entire piece is a visual feast worth revisiting.”
Swift’s New Album Shatters Records
The Fate of Ophelia serves as the lead single
from The Life of a Showgirl, Swift’s 12th studio album, which
dropped at midnight on Friday. The record marks her reunion with longtime
collaborators Max Martin and Shellback and features 12 tracks,
including the provocative fan-favorite “Wood.”
In addition to the cinematic video, Swift also released lyric
videos for every track on the album, offering fans a complete visual
experience across platforms.
Within 24 hours of its release, The Life of a Showgirl
sold an astonishing 2.7 million copies, breaking several first-day sales
and streaming records and cementing Swift’s reign as both a musical and visual
storyteller.
