When AMC Theatres Distribution and Taylor Swift’s team unveiled their top-secret project Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl on Sept. 19, the plan was ambitious AMC’s announcement teased a release in “100 or more additional countries outside the U.S.” However, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that those global expansion plans have now been scrapped.
Initially, Showgirl was scheduled for a three-day
exclusive run (Oct. 3–5) in North America and at least 18
international territories, including the U.K., France, Germany, Canada,
Mexico, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The September
announcement also hinted at a broader October rollout, with further
dates and ticket details expected by Oct. 3 but that update never came.
Instead, AMC quietly stated on Oct. 5 that Showgirl’s theatrical
run had concluded.
Sources indicate the cancellation mostly affects Latin
America and parts of Asia. The film did open successfully in Mexico
and Uruguay, but many expected markets never received release
confirmations. AMC declined to explain the sudden shift, though insiders
suggest factors like ratings board reviews, subtitling delays, or
simply Swift’s preference to move on could have played a role. Since Showgirl
was reportedly shown only in English, localization challenges may have
complicated international distribution.
Despite the curtailed rollout, Showgirl proved a massive
domestic success, dominating the box office over the weekend with $34.1
million, outperforming films led by Dwayne Johnson and Leonardo
DiCaprio. The 89-minute “cinematic experience” blending music videos,
behind-the-scenes content, and lyric visuals doubled as a celebration of
Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, released Oct. 3. The
event also premiered her self-directed music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.”
Audience data from PostTrak showed that 90% of
moviegoers were female, with 74% under age 34, and the largest
segment being 18–24-year-olds.
Globally, Showgirl grossed an estimated $50.1
million, including $16 million from 54 territories though some
industry rivals dispute those numbers, saying verified reports exist for only 14–22
markets.
This marks Swift’s second partnership with AMC
Theatres Distribution after the record-breaking Eras Tour film in 2023,
which grossed over $180 million worldwide. For AMC CEO Adam Aron,
the collaboration has been a major triumph and the studio takes pride in
achieving a No. 1 box office debut with just two weeks’ notice
between announcement and release.
