Walton Goggins has officially signed on to star alongside Amber Midthunder in Painter, an upcoming action film created by John Wick screenwriter Derek Kolstad and newly acquired by 20th Century Studios.
As part of the deal, Avatar director James Cameron —
whose long-running franchise is housed at 20th Century — will serve as
executive producer on the project.

The film marks the directorial debut of Garrett Warren, a
seasoned stunt coordinator who’s worked on two Avatar films, as well as Logan
and the 2024 Road House reboot.
Painter tells the story of a young woman, highly
trained from childhood, who must put all her skills to the test when her father
is kidnapped. Midthunder, known for her breakout role in 20th Century’s Prey,
plays the lead. Goggins will portray her father.
Originally presented as a sales title by FilmNation at the
American Film Market (AFM) last fall, Painter generated buzz for both
its original concept and for being Warren’s first feature film as director. The
project eventually caught James Cameron’s attention, who helped shepherd it to
20th Century Studios.
Actor Alan Ritchson (Reacher) was initially cast
opposite Midthunder but exited the project due to scheduling conflicts.

The film will be produced by Drew Simon and Sam Speiser
under FilmNation’s Infrared Pictures banner, along with Kolstad and his manager
Josh Adler. J.R. Young will oversee the project for 20th Century Studios.
Midthunder has had a busy year. She starred opposite Jack
Quaid in Paramount’s action film Novocaine, and appeared in A24’s
psychological thriller Opus with Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich — both
of which hit theaters on March 14. She’ll next be seen in Prime Video’s
upcoming series adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie.
Goggins, meanwhile, is enjoying a career high. He earned an
Emmy nomination for his performance in HBO’s The White Lotus Season 3,
and returned for the final season of The Righteous Gemstones. He also
starred in The Uninvited, directed by his wife, Nadia Conners, which
premiered at SXSW.
Next, Goggins reprises his fan-favorite role as The Ghoul in
Season 2 of Amazon’s acclaimed video game adaptation Fallout, premiering
December 17.
